No. Mine had the grooves for the o-rings but didn't come with o-rings,
and I figured that was OK since no other chevy distributors I'm aware
of had them, and I figured a little oil bleed past the housing would help
oil the gear.
Re: If you have an MSD distributor... (mountainmotor)
Thanks. I'm using a Dart Iron Eagle/Rocket block, and the bore is chamfered. I was just wondering if anyone has used them and if they picked up any oil pressure at idle by doing so. I get 25-30 psi hot oil pressure at idle which is sufficient, but a couple more psi would be welcome.
I don't use the o-rings either. My oil pressure on the 542 was around 20psi at an idle(hot). I just pulled everything apart and everything looks great except for one of my roller lifters is a little worn. The cam however looks perfect. I will send all the lifters back to be rebuilt - they are from Comp Cams. My spring pressure is 250# on the seat and 700# open.
I just got my tach drive distributor and was wondering the same thing. I love the forum! After this post I guess there is not need to install them on the distributor going in the zz4.
Monty, on a slightly different topic, but related to MSD distributors, what
gear are you running on your MSD dist? I'm running a -8 Comp Cams
camshaft and they say a bronze gear is not needed, so I didn't touch the
gear that came on my MSD, which is iron. I've got ~1300 miles on my engine
now and noticed the timing was 2 degrees less than what I had it set to
so I pulled the distributor and the gear is wearing. Still got plenty of tooth
left, but the teeth are worn enough to leave a noticeable ridge at the back
of each tooth.
I'm not running a high volume/high pressure pump either. I have 45psi max
cold and 25-30 hot idle.
I was using bronze distributor gears, but I switched to one of COMP's composite gears awhile back and it seems to be working much better. My Dart Iron Eagle/Rocket block uses BBC diameter cam bearings, and unfortunately, so one offers a roller SBC cam core with BBC cam bearings, and with a pressed on cast iron gear. So I have to use the bronze or composite gears.
The bronze gears were actually working okay for me, I could get about 5-10k miles out of them, and I do run a high-volume Titan Pro-Billet oil pump with about 90psi cold and 25-30 psi hot idle(Mobil1 15w-50).
So with the bronze gears I will need to start checking it around 5000 miles for wear? What is this composite gear yall are talking about? I already have a bronze gear I plan on using first, but if I need to change it after 5k miles I would like to put something better on. I plan on droping this into my ZZ4.
