OK, I'll go first :D

I'm doing this right now for my '87.......weekend warrior/cruiser kinda car. My goals were to build a torquey(sp?) motor, RELIABLE, put you back in the seat kinda ride that had to be smog legal here in Cali

1. An"817" factory block, out to 420 CI, splayed,
2. All forged internals, 10.5-1 CR,
3. Hand worked CNC'd 195s by AFR,
4. Superram, ported and matched,
5. LPE 219 w/1.6 Pro magnums
6. Hooker 2149's, matched to the heads,
7. An RT main cat w/flowmaster cat back,
8. A "built" 700R4 with a 2200-2400 stall (not sure yet),
9. A D44 with 3.07s and carbon fiber half shafts,
10. A 150 shot of N2O.

I'll run this thru the MAF, and I'm not sure about the injectors...... I'll probably copy SKI and Corky and max out the duty cycle on some smallish injectors for the atomization.

I would hope this will idle down to 700 or 800, and get me somewhere around 550 HP and torque at the crank NA......... I hope

Whoops, typo, sorry :bb (I'll edit that)

It's an 817. That's the casting number on the block, designating it a 2 bolt main 400. Check this site out for some cool info:

i'd probabely go with AFR 195's fully CNCed, the cam is more dependant on what you're looking for, you said torquey so i guess a fairly mild grind, i'd give comp cams a call.

 Oo! Oo! Oo! I’ve thought of this combo several times and hope build one.
Use 6” rod and eutectic pistons for 9.5-10:1 c.r. using 64cc WP Sportsman II heads. Now using a short (<270 degrees) duration cam with only 105-lope separation for a very street-able but torque’y combo.
Should be less than $3000 (in parts) but pistons and cam would take some searching.

This is what I'm doing. I went with a mild roller cam because I like a very streetable car. I only went with Topline 180cc heads though.
