Been working hard on the car to get it ready for a date at the track.
Finished up line lock install, shift light, installed carb spacer(it really liked it on dyno), upped jets, installed 90/10 shocks, removed swaybar, set valves, finished up some little odds and ends underneath....
and then....
Stuck the slicks on and went riding!!
Of course I was on back roads, so traction wasn't that great, but I can tell you that slicks...even when spinnng through 3rd gear leaving long black marks...are a whole lot better than anything I can do on street tires!
I actually got to stick my foot on the floor a couple of time in 1st gear! That's big news!
Then I tried the line lock with the two gallons of water that I happened to bring with me....
Start in 2nd gear...instant smoke in 2 seconds! Lot of of sticky rubber everywhere!
So I'm hoping track traction is much better than back roads. If it is, we're going to have fun.
I hope that you were smart enough to remember to prep the rear fender wells.
I've taken off with the thoughts of just Hell raising burn outs and then having to scrub for hours afterwards. I've found that a quick thick coat of past wax really works. Just rub on a thick white coat and let it dry - then you can just wipe off the rubber and wax all at the same time.
i've tried baby oil coating and spray on Pam. I still like the paste wax.
What size slicks? I now have 10X28's and run 10 PSI
Yeah.....I spent last night digging/scraping the gunk off of it from just one line lock test!
It'll get some wax on it tonight.
I'm not making any promises on ET. It's going to be handful to herd this sucker down the track. I'm mainly looking for decent MPH #'s this first time out to verify everything is OK HP wise.
I only have 10x26" slicks. I used to use 12-13 psi with the 427, but the other day with 15 psi in them they appeared to still need a little more. I guess the 540 pounds them a little harder!
Weather is looking iffy.... it's been in the mid 80's around here in the daytime and around 70-75 at night... super humid and low baro pressure. Hopefully this front pushes through tomorrow and it gets conducive to good HP!
Jim - With my 420+ inch pound rear spring, gas shocks, stripped out rear for weight loss, and 3/4 sway. I get very little weight x-fer. So i spent some time at the drag strip just doing 60 foot times. when i would look at the slicks with anything above 10 psi i wasn't burning up the whole width. It would leave about 1/2 inch on each side of both rear tires. I've tried as low as 8 psi, but the car had stability problems when you let off of the gas at the end of the 1/4. Even around 9 it would feel mushy or wobble when your on the brakes to make the first return road.
I have goodyears with tubes and lots of screws. I use the lower burnout out type
Jim, that sounds like a fun ride. Let me be the first to predict a MPH. I am going to guess 136, sound like a reasonable guess? What slicks are you running and what gear will you be in when running through the traps, I assume 3rd? Nice ride Jim, just love your car. Bill.
