Default What is a street/ strip engine ?

What exactly is a street/ strip engine ? Is it a hopped up street engine that has better flowing heads, new cam, headers ? Something that still runs on pump gas ? Or are they race engines that are driven on the street ?

For myself, I would say my new engine is more of a race engine that can still run on pump gas. I don't know what the reliability will be, but I'm guessing it won't be that of my current engine (more adjustments & fine tuning). In being a "street/ strip" engine I tried to keep the powerband in the 2500-6500 with highway being about 3200-3400.

What's your definition ?

A high performance engine that has pleasent 'street manner'. Or, how about this? In the true sense, street/strip = oxymoron An engine that is compromised. Doesn't do either very well.

To me a Street/Strip small block Engine should have the following components for good cruiseablility and performance at the strip:
A set of good 220+ cfm after market heads.
A high rise air gap Manifold or Super Victor #2925.
A 750 cfm to 870 cfm.
A good set of 1 7/8 headers.
A Hydrualic high lift roller cam with roller Rockers.
Runs of 92 octane Gas @ 550 HP with 560 ft lbs of TQ.
4 speed Auto Trans with 3:73 to 4:11 rear gears.
A good 3500-4500 Stall Converter.
Has A/C- Power Steering-Power Brakes and still idles well at 800-900 RPM.
Water temps never exceed 200 degrees during parades or stop and go traffic.
And can pull down low 11's to high 10's through the quarter mile.
This is what I look for in a small block engine.
Big Block guys can chime in....however I know nothing about big blocks and their performance levels for Street/Strip.

:iagree: Yeah that's a pretty good definition :D

Corkvette I was expecting to see some sort of power adder (supercharger, NOS, etc.). Very impressive combp/ results :smash: Somehow I don't see 20mpg in the near future but it sure would be nice  .

I consider mine a street/strip engine, though I've never dragged it.Idles like a Pro Stocker, sometimes the power brakes quit, and the latest mileage is near 14mpg.That's with the new 700r4 trans and 3.70 gears.

As with every previous engine,I've asked around, called tech support of various aftermarket suppliers, and tried to arrive at the perfect combination. It seems not everyone's opinion of street/strip is the same,so what works for one,may not be acceptable for another. They tend to overrate the characteristics, which you don't realize till after you've built and fired the engine for yourself.

I'm happy with mine, and for what it's worth the DragRace software puts my 80 in the 11.8 second 115 mph range if I cut a perfect light with excellent traction.I'd be thrilled with low to mid 12's on street tires. My butt meter agrees. :yesnod:

Default Big Blocks or Small Blocks

A good street strip engine would follow the lines of the early SB and BB high HP Vettes. It should have a max compression on premium pump gas of 11-1 with a solid lifter cam around the 500 lift range. Completely streetable and decent enough to have fun at the dragstrip or the red lites with out having your to tape your doors shut for fear of having them blown off :D

To me, the only thing that differentiates a pure race engine from a street/strip engine is the ability of the street/strip engine to run on pump gas.
