Default 383 build up

Looking for your thoughts on this. I am putting parts list together for the build and need your thoughts as i have very little exsperience in matching parts. Scat crank, Eagle rods, 10:1 KB Hypereutectic pistons, Crane Cam Power Max H-290,World Products S/R Torquer Heads 67cc, Dynomax Coated headers,and Edelbrock Performance or RPM intake as i have both already. I am looking for a good street performer in the 385 HP range.Not planning on seeing RPM over 5700. Any info would be great as i would rather ask now then find out later i have made the wrong choice. Buying a crate motor is not an option as building your own is allot more fun :banghead: well at least i wil learn more when i am done with all your help. thanks in advance :thumbs:

i would skip over the hyper junks and get the forged ones they are not that much more you will be happy in the end especially if you go with the hypers and half to rip it back down to replace them because of cracking them from detonation :cheers:

I would replace the S/R heads with Vortec heads. Vortec flow better and have a higher port velocity (better torque & throttle response). This will require a Vortec-style Edelbrock RPM manifold. Your compression ratio is a little high for iron heads, stay with 9.5:1 or less. What are the specs for your cam? I am thinking it may be a little too large for your application.

What is your cruising RPM? What RPM do you USUALLY shift at?

Comp Cam 268H cam would be a nice choice. 224/230* duration @ 0.05 valve lift. 1.6 Rockers would give you a respectable 0.508/0.512" lift. Should be 375-400 HP with plenty of torque.

Been playing with DD2000, according to DD2000, you may be better off with Comp Cam XE274 (230/236 duration w/ 0.519/0.523 lift (using 1.6 rockers)) as compared to the XE268 (224/230 w/ 0.508/0.512 lift). Here are the torque curves:

TQ_1 = XE274
TQ_2 = XE268

RPM TQ_1 TQ_2
2000 408 397
2500 421 410
3000 426 416
3500 432 425
4000 429 424
4500 415 413
5000 388 388
5500 344 345
6000 295 297

The XE274 should be matched well to the Edelbrock RPM manifold.

DD2000 inputs:
383
9.5 compress
L31 Vortec heads
Dual Plane intake (RPM will give better top end)
750 cfm
Small Tube Headers

Riley, here is some better information:

http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/57841/

Article in Chevy Hi-Performance about a Vortec 383.

Check out "Test 3":

Basically a 383 with Vortec heads and a 218/224 cam with 112 Lobe centerline (0.525/0.525 lift). Edlebrock RPM manifold.

I would strongly consider the Sportman II heads. These are a pretty good bang for the buck head and have good flow in stock form. The RPM intake is a great intake to use also :yesnod: . I'm using both of these things on my 355 & they work great so they should compliment a larger 383 even more :yesnod: .

I also recommend forged pistons over the hyper ;)

I have been looking at the Edelbrock Performer RPM Heads and i think i will go with the Comp Cam XE 274 cam. I would love to get the ARF 190 heads but you have to put a limit on the price tag. Thank again for the help will keep you posted on the build. Will be picking up the parts next week so i have a few days to change parts if needed.
