Default Crank trigger on street vehicle?

Anyone running a crank trigger for a street car? Are they fragile? What about rain?

Thanks...

Nope... but I bet your lawnmower does!

Hall effect sensors and a magnet will do it, its just the multi cylinder problem that gets complicated :jester

Re: crank triggers

I've been running a crank trigger for almost a year now, but I put mine inside the timing cover
(Vortec SB truck design).

I assume you are referring to an external Aftermarket trigger being fragile? There was some
info a couple of years ago about one mfg (think it was Holley) having failures with their crank
magnets. Haven't heard anything negative since then.

If it makes you feel any better, several generations of Ford engines apparently use an external
toothed wheel & VR sensor, mounted behind the crank pulley, AFAIK. There is a site here that
has a lot of info on that system: http://www.dainst.com/info/edis/edis.html

Search for a post on this board: http://www.chevytalk.org/threads/pos...t=&Board=UBB12
from about a year ago that covered crank triggers (I think that was even the title) - it has a lot
of background info. I'm not aware of any stock GM engine design with an external crank
trigger - they are all tucked away behind shields.

Huh? Interesting...is a magneto is the same as a crank trigger? The magneto on my lawnmower will knock you to the ground if you happen to have your hand on the spark plug wire! (Speaking from experience... :yesnod: )

Thanks - I tried Chevy talk and have fewer replies than here. The thread on crank triggers seems to imply that some folks are running them with no big problems, so I guess I'll give it a try.

Has anyone ever heard of another way to trigger an aftermarket ECU? I probably should start another thread...

Thanks!

A magneto just puts a distribueter and alternator into the same package...

You get a one piece deal that handles timing and charging! Thats why the harley guys like em... dont need a battery!

The way your lawn mower works is by generating a magnetic field that is always building energy when the motor is running, a magnet on the crank spins and lights up a hall effect sensor that releases a charge as long as the magnet is there... On a single cylinder its a piece of cake... on multi cylinders you cant just define top dead center on the power stroke and throw a magnet on that spot... you have to determine where the magnet needs to sit, and or how many of them.

Simple system for small stuff... pain in the rear for large!

Is'nt a crank trigger the same thing as a crank sensor? Most newer cars are using crank sensors arent they? And many of them external right? If thats tha case I cant see how it would be a problem

Thanks for the good news! I was just concerned. If some road junk gets up there and damages the sensor somehow, you are out of luck. Of course it could be because your roads are so clean up there - not like the crappy ones here...

The sensor is obscured from road debris by the front cross member.
I wish Montana roads were "clean" .. :banghead: :banghead:
