Default Question on oil cooler pressure drop

I didn't get any response in the C3 section before the topic fell off of the first page so I thought that I would ask here.

I need to install oil coolers on my '79 for both the engine and transmission. There are both stacked plate and tube and fin styles of coolers. Does anyone have any information on the pressure drop through either of these styles of coolers? Or, is there any pressure drop?

The stacked plate type have much better heat transfer efficiency. If you really NEED oil coolers, don't even consider the tube and fin type.

If you have a good plumbing design (minimum lines) and use half inch lines and mandrel bent couplings, you should not even notice a pressure drop on the gage.

Also, a thermostat is a good idea to allow the oil to warm up quickly and not overcool the oil. The ideal oil tempearture is about 200-210, but it should not be cooled below 180, and, hopefully, the cooler will keep it below 250.

Thank you for your reply. I have a 406 and a 3000 stall torque converter in my street car and expect to need both engine oil and transmission coolers. It looks like it is going to take 20 feet of tubing to run each of them and the pressure drop over a long run of hose and through a cooler bothered me, mostly about the engine oil pressure.

i never liked the popular full flow cooler. i see no need to pumb all the engine oil thru it. i built my own design heat exchanger(uses copper heater "hose" for quick warm up)
i plumb off a T where the gauge connects, thru a 1/16" restriction, drains back into the pan. Works great summer & winter
and it cost <$10

That's where C&R racing has the nicest gizmo. It's a remote filter mount with a built in oil cooler bypass which you can dial in to get the oil flow through the cooler so that the oil is in the desired temp range. Works like a champ. I have one and can take a pic if anyone wants to see what it looks like.

I agree with the don't go with the tube and fin type.
