A friend of mine (no, it's not me, I'm not in denial :D ) as put up a 350 cu with stock head and a mild cam, about 224 dur @ 0.50 and a little under 0,500" lift. The cam failed on all lobes and only one of the rod bearing burned to the copper layer. The engine had 600 miles before engine knock began.
My question, what causes this?? Is it the cam failure that causes the rod bearing failure?? Cam lube was used for break in.
Anybody ever experience that? The cam is a hydraulic flat tappet Speedpro TRW one.
Re: Cam failure plus an engine bearing (American Boy)
WOW ! That is horrible! There are too many possibilities to diagnose what went wrong, by remote control. A couple of thoughts: Did the valve springs go into coil bind? It is hard to imagine what would wipe ALL the lobes, if it weren't an across the board problem. Debris from the cam could have caused the rod bearing failure. As could, clearance problems or dirt. You/he need to get to the bottom of this before reassembly. Tell him better luck next time.

Was the lifter bore checked for proper clearanceing. If the lifters get hot and start to starve for oil, they add a boat load of stress on the cam along with a ton of heat, Where the lobes blue?
