Default "Big" Block Engine

Think a 427 / 7.0L is top dog? How about this for a REALLY big engine install? http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ccsshb/12cyl/

Applicable cranks on these babies are huge!

The crosshead arrangement was used on reciprocating steam engines of yore, and ship reciprocating steam engines had similar bore, stroke and RPM figures. With the crosshead arrangement the piston rod can be sealed and steam admitted to both side of the piston. This is the way a typical two-cylinder steam locomotive is setup, so it makes four power strokes per wheel revolution from two cylinders.

Two sided combustion is not possible on an IC engine due to piston cooling requirements, but the crosshead does eliminate side loading, which would be significant on such a long stroke engine.

The injector system would be interesting. With a 38" bore I imagine multiple injectors are required to achieve reasonably even fuel distribution to consume all the air.

The 50 percent themal efficiency is absolutely outstanding. This may be one of the most thermally efficient engines ever built.

Another interesting feature is that these engines will spend most of their working life at "full throttle" as container ships are powered to provide the design cruising speed, typically 15-16 knots, at full power, and the life of this engine is probably measured in tens of thousands of hours.
