Default Carburation question

I'm planning on having a 600 - 650 HP small block built..

Here are details:

406 small block with 11:1 compression, solid roller cam with .676 lift and 264/270 degrees .050 duration, Dart Pro-1 230 cc heads - stage II ported and matched to 1206 gasket, victor Jr. (matched to 1206 gasket) with 1/2 inch spacer.

What size carb should I get... I'll either get a 950 HP series carb or a 1050 dominator... I wonder what will be better for my application?? I know that 950 cfm should be enough.. but I might get more HP with the 1050 - correct??

Desktop dyno comes up with approx. 600 HP with untouched Dart Pro I heads.. I'm sure that the porting will add some more HP...

Oliver,

My last 454 made right at 500 rwhp (with a carb spacer). I think a very honest flywheel HP estimate would be 625 or so. I ran mine with a 1000 hp series. No that a Dominator can not work on the street, but for your hp goals it is probably not needed. A nice feature of the HP series is they have adjustible air bleeds, makes them easier to tune on both end of the rpm range.

The HP series flow less than what they advertise. I believe the 950 flows around 830 or so and the 1000 flows around 950-980.

A 600-650 hp small block is a serious piece and that cam is going to like to rev.

I'm sure you can make the power with a well set up HP1000 ( I like them too) but the Dominators usually outpower a 4150 carb slightly. You're going to be moving lots of air, so a well tuned carb is going to be essential.

The Dominator can be made to work on the street without too much effort. I think the 4150 would easily suit your HP needs, but so would a Dominator and would likely help just by design of spreading the venturis out further.

Plus they look so cool!!!

Jim, I am curious. Is a Dominator taller than a 4150 carb. I am right at the limit of hood clearance with my setup now. I would love to try a Dominator but a new hood is out of the question at this time. Sounds like a great engine Olivier. Glad you didn't sell the car too.

Olivier, why the Victor Jr and not the Super Victor? And is Mark building your engine?

The main problem with the dominator is that I'm not aware about any drop base setups that are available.. so I will probably go with a built 1000 cfm HP series carb..

The Super Victor would not fit under my hood.. The highest possible combination is the Victor Jr. with 1/2 inch spacer.. If I want more power at one poing.. I might cut the hood and use a higher intake...
Yes- Mark is going to build the new engine... I'm just waiting to get my money from the '98 Vette sale...

I got my drop base air filter from Ram Air Systems in Canada. Check out their website. Lots of combinations. Mine is a 2.5" drop with a 4" tall filter and is 16" diameter.

There is another place that Steve B (542C2) used to get his from. You might ask him.

I "think" the Dominator is a little taller, but I can't remember how much. Maybe a 1/4" or so?

No nitrous for me... If I'd add nitrous - I would very likely run in the 9's and I don't want to run 9's because I'd need a full cage and lots of other stuff that I don't want to install...

http://www.ramairbox.com I am using their open top setup on my cowl induction 74 hood. It seals to the bottom of the hood and draws only fresh air.
