Default Need engine help!

I just changed the intake manifold on my 383. As I was trying to turn it over there was a loud slam, like metal hitting. I pulled the number one plug back out and bumped it to the mark right after air blew out (TDC). Lets call the normal position of the distributor cap at this point 11 o'clock, 12 o'clock would be the front of the engine. Now the cap is pointing about 2-3 o'clock. Did I loose a timing chain? What do I need to look for at this point. Thanks in advance.

I don't really understand your reference to the position of the distributor body, but it doesn't matter. As long as the rotor is pointing to the plug wire tower in the cap that holds the #1 plug wire, the distributor is in OK.

Normally there is no heed to pull the plugs for a manifold change. You say, "I pulled the number one plug back out and...". Did you do other work also? Is there a reason to suspect timing chain problems? It really bears no relation to what you say you did. If the rotor turns while you "bump" the engine the chain should be OK. I see no correlation between the stated project and a "loud slam", noise. Do you have more clues, maybe?

Was the engine was running correctly before the intake change? If so it sounds to me like the distributor wasn't indexed correctly when it was re-installed after the intake change. With your description the engine timing is way advanced. That will cause things to 'bang'.

Yep, Dummy me didn't know that you could turn the driveshaft with a long screwdriver. I played with it until I was pointing at the #1 plug and now it purrrrs like a cat. Thanks for all the help
