Default New roller engine question...

I got my new 388 started over the weekend

It sounds incredible idling in the garage at 1250 rpms. I need to add a relay to the electric fans and get 1 more fuel line fitting to finish up on the engine. I started it with the -8AN fuel hose in a gas can which also allowed me to check for leaks.

My questions are, how long should I run the engine before I drain the 7qt oil pan ? And how long should I run the engine before I should check the valve lash (mech roller cam) ?

If things work out, I may be taking it down the road this weekend :D

Probably ok until after you break in the rings.
Did you add a quart of GM E.O.S. ?

Should??? I don't know the rules, but I can tell you what *I* do. After a flat tappet cam break in, and a little running to set the timing and check for leaks, I drain it immediately. I want to get the assembly lube, rag lint, initial wear particles, and whatever, out of there right away. Most often that initial oil will be watery thin, when you drain it. Change the filter, too.

After the initial oil change, I would adjust the lifters, HOT. Then I would check the cold clearance and record the cold lash, for reference for future cold lashings. You can then drive it moderately to start the rings seating. *I* then change the oil, again after 100-200 miles. I leave that oil in for 500-1000 miles. By then you ought to be good to go. You will get many different answers on this subject. Most of which are not wrong. We all have our preferences. These are mine. Good luck, and...

SmokedTires I'm glad you got it running! I checked my lash after the first 40 miles or so of use and they are all right on. The BAD news, my new cam ate its distributor gear...again. I have no idea why its doing it, this time the wear is even so there is hope. I think it is a metal incompatibility and I ordered one of Summit's last carbon gears, comp said it should work so we will see.

Good Luck!

71coupe- Stupid question for today.....what's the GM EOS

Thanks CFI, I'll change the oil before the weekend then :)

Travis I sure hope that I have better luck with my distributor gear. I'm sorry to hear you're still fighting this. I installed a bronze gear which I had to redrill the crosshole because of Mallory putting an offset hole into their shafts on the Unilite distributors :nonod: That means if I want to use a carbon gear then I'll have to replace my distributor & tach

Engine Oil Supplement. It's usually added before the initial fire up.

Here is the GM p/n: 1052367
http://www.gmgoodwrench.com/PartsAcc...eProducts.html
You can add it now. I usually add it on the first 3 or 4 oil changes after a rebuild. Note: It says on the bottle "Not recommended for use as an additive for engine oil" Don't worry about that, it's just their legal dept B.S.

Interesting! I wonder what the intended purpose of "Engine Oil Supplement" really is? Anybody try brushing their teeth with it??? :lolg: :lolg: :lolg:
