Well installing rings for my 383 rebuild. Installed a set of Speed pro R-9902 30 rings. I pulled them out of the box now I cant tell which is the top. I have been reading some conflicting reports.
The box did have a inner lip which was top and second rings.
Both rings on the flat side are blackish in color but then one has a chome end that rides in the cyclinder bore.
One ring said "top".(has black end)- I installed this rings in the top of the piston. The second ring I think. just had a DOT for "UP" (this had the chore end)
I thought I was all set. then I read on a few online articles that the chrome ring is the top ring.
Now I dont know which is top or second.
Any help
Thanks
Dennis
The second ring should have a "reverse twist". The face of the ring isn't square to the cyinder wall. The bottom of the ring is the larger OD. The bottom of the ring is a scraper, to pull the oil down the cylinder, on the down stroke. This may help if the twist isn't too small to detect.
