popping noise

My 65 vette with a 74 vintage 350 cid engine just started making a popping noise (that's the only way I can explain it) Mainly when I excellerate with it in neutral. I haven't tried driving it since it started making the noise. Only with it in the driveway.
My friend came over who has a lot more experience with cars and engines than I do and said it was Probably the donut gasket on the exhaust manifold.
Well I just came in from the garage after replacing the donut and it still makes the same sound. The bolts on the engine that bolt the exhaust manifold on were a little loose so I tighted them up also.
Could I have blown a valve ?
Any suggestions on what to check next would be helpful.
Thanks, Mark

No other sounds that I know of.

The engine had a tune up by a professional (which I'm not) last summer maybe 2K miles ago. With wires, Plugs, Oil change, timing etc..
I purchased the car 2 1/2 years ago and the owner said the engine was rebuilt with an Edelbrock kit. I know the carb and intake manifold are both Edelbrock but I can't see the cam which he said was also an Edelbrock. The rockers are Comp CAM rollers. The distributor does not have points.
I can take it for a ride but was concerned about causing more damage.
It obviously needs some work. The question is "how much work can you do yourself?" If you think that once you find the problem you'll need to pay someone to fix it, you may as well take it to someone that can. BIG caution here! Any shop can change parts but most are used to dealing with late model cars and may not have a clue (but will gladly take your money and keep changing parts until they "get lucky"). If that's the case, I'd suggest Making another post asking for competent techs in your area.
