I'm wondering if its necissary to replace the timing gear on the crankshaft snout. I am having a heck of a time getting it off the crank! I tried a gear puller that was a touch to big (had to put a socket on end of the snout for it to have leverage.)
Do I need to replace it? What size puller do I need to easily get it off if it must be replaced?
I would replace the whole set. A jaw type gear puller should work. You can probably borrow one from one of the chain, parts store near you. I have always had success with a pry bar. Two pry bars to equalize the force on both sides with the most stubborn.
In the block, even with the block on the car. I changed my timing set, only, this spring.

Warp what? The pry bar???
OH! The crank is on the floor. You might have mentioned that in the first place. That makes it a little harder to wrestle with. Pry bars, punches and a hammer, or if all else fails, a three jawed, gear puller.
It's hard to beat a good old Cloyes timing set. I used a stock truck set, which is a double row, roller chain. THIS one even had three key ways on the crank sprocket, and was under $20.00.
