I can't recall a noise from a converter. I've had converters let go inside and wipe out the trans, but no warning noise before the failure. Since the converter isn't user serviceable, I'd get that thing out of there before it gets really expensive. That is, of course, if the noise is really from the converter and not the flexplate or something else inside the bellhousing area.

My GM 2500 stall converter has a loud whine. In neutral or park, no noise. But once it's in gear, sounds like a gear drive. I've had people at stoplights ask me if I have a supercharger. It's made this noise for over 2 years and 18,000 miles with no problems yet.

RACE ON!!!
If it was the pump, I would have gotten about 2 miles, not 18,000. It's the converter. Most peoples guesses point to Torrington bearing out of whack. Sounds bad-***, and isn't costing any power, so I leave it in. Until the day it blows up of course.
