Neighbor brought home a project and he asked a couple of things. I told him I would have to ask my resident experts and get right back to him. So, thanks again for being here.

Starter alignment: I have aligned starters on the engine stand but never while installed in the car. Is it possible? About every 2 out of 5 times the starter fails to engage the flywheel. I'm sure bubba left out or miscounted the shims.
How can we determine the CFM of the aftermarket Holly 4-bbl? Runs VERY rich. On a Performer EPS manifold. Any particular adjustments we could make? Runs strong but really loads up under 2000 rpm's.
(The 78 in the sig is mine, not the neighbors project)

Reason: Added Info
A paper clip makes a good starter Bendix gauge. With the starter drive gear engaged with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear, the paper clip should fit in the valley of the ring gear, between teeth and just touch the tip of the drive gear tooth. If the drive gear is hitting the side of the ring gear and not engaging, the starter needs shims. Usually, I just add shims until it works and "sounds" right.

The size of the carb can be determined by the "list" number stamped on the choke flange of the air horn. An inappropriate sized carb shouldn't run rich. It sound like something is wrong with the carb. A blown power valve?
