Will a GM 68-82 spin on oil filter adapter work on a 64 block? One vendor mentions using the 68-82 adapter on the earlier blocks but I heard it would not work. Which is correct?

I don't have an answer for you but a lot of C1/2/early C3 owners have made the switch. Try posting your question in those forums and most likely you'l get some usefull info.

No it won't. The 68-82 adapter is made for the 68-82 blocks. Earlier blocks are machined differently.
Go to NAPA and buy a conversion kit. About $20, as I recall.
When I put headers on my '67, the instructions said you had to convert to spin-on. I believe it, because the old canister was much bigger than the spin-on I have now, and the spin-on is close to the tubes.
First I bought a Trans-Dapt piece-o-cr*p from a speed shop. Tried three times to install it. Poured oil out every time. Then bought the kit from NAPA. Obviously much better quality when you put them side-by-side. The felt gasket that goes on the center section of the adapter plate is glued on with the NAPA, where on the other one you had to stack up the pieces and slip them up in the block, hoping nothing came apart on the way. Even when things appeared OK, it wouldn't seal. The surface around the outside that seals to the block with an O-ring was rough on the Trans-Dapt, but machined smooth on the NAPA.
