I have my 4 bolt main 010 casting 350 block. It will be sent to the machine shop in a week or two. Hopefully it will be fine for a .30 over-bore and test out ok for cracks...
My next item up for purchase is the crank. A couple of questions for you guru types out there:
Better cast crank? Scat or Eagle? I am leaning toward the SCAT 9000 383 crank. The counterweights are knife edged for windage and the Eagle isn't. The price is pretty close (scat a touch higher). I am thinking externally balanced crank and 6" rods. I know the debate on 6" rods, but as I will be buying all new internals the 6" rods from eagle and scat are the same price as 5.7".
Anyone have opinions on these two cranks?
I have seen a ton of Eagle clones on E-bay, but for the $50 price difference I will stick with a name!
Cool.
The SCAT 9000 cast crank they claim is good for 500HP and 6000 RPM. I am looking for 450+ and a red line of 5500. I will be going with the SCAT crank.
$189 can't go wrong!
Should I stick with SCAT rods too? I am looking at Speed Pro Hyper. flat top pistons (10:1 CR w/ 64cc heads). This is for a daily driver. Need some oomph, but nothing too crazy. Pump gas friendly is a must.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again to all you guys who know this stuff. This will be my first engine build. I do have an expert mechanic to help me out- my dad. He has been rebuilding engines for 40+ years, but never really done any high performance stuff. He rebuilds cars to showroom stock. Mostly Corvairs (although he has done a ton of Chevy 350's in his trucks for snowplowing).
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Scat 9000 crank can handle some power make sure you accurately measure the journals I have seen them a little under from the factory no big deal -1 bearings
Thanks for that heads up. I was certainly planning on measuring everything at least twice! However that given that info I will wait to order my bearings until I have the crank/rods/pistons in hand.
I have been looking at prices, and unless I go the E-bay route, JEGS has a pretty good deal on a balanced rotating assebly with Scat crank & rods with speed-pro pistons. The rings they give you are crap, but the price is great.
If you are going for the hole rotating assembly package check out www.cnc-motorsports.com another forum member turned me on to it and they have some really great prices and deal in Eagle and SCAT.
I think either Rod will suite you fine the only thing I would look out for is those ARP wave lock rod bolts... I had some in a SBC once and they flew apart faster than the straw house the first little pig built I did some research after that experince and found that it is not all that uncommon for those bolts to fail catistrophically (ARP is supposedly correcting this) Not trying to bash ARP ..their conventional rod bolts are great jsut had a bad experience with those wave lock ones.

Based in your other components and stated usage, there would be nothing wrong with a good set of reconditioned stock rods. Even your old rods, redone.

RACE ON!!!
Yeah, I actually thought of this myself. However for the price of reconditioning my rods (that have 115K on them) I think I will spend the extra $$ on the new ones. I actually am planning on doing a rebuild of the L-82 at some point. Make for a nice garage ornament sitting on the stand all pretty and blue...
