We are using the correct tool, but starting to pull metal shavings off the crank (with about 1/2" to go). This is a new Scat 4340 crank, and a damper I pulled off my 433.
Will heating or cooling the damper make any difference before we try again tonight? Seems like cooling it would cause the metal to slightly contract and widen the ID. Any suggestions?
You're going to HAVE to hone it. Don't take a chance on splitting it!! They almost always have to be honed to fit the crank. They are made undersized slightly so that they can fit all cranks. I'm actually surprised it fit the stock one without honing, but apparently there is a huge difference in tolerances in all the factory and aftermarket stuff.
You can take it to a machine shop to be done in a couple of minutes on a rod re-sizing machine, or you can do it in a few hours with a brake cylinder hone and LOTS of patience!

The directions on Fluidamprs website says to hone to fit. If I remember right the clearance is supposed to be .0005".
