This is the first time I bought a crankshaft (big block). Mains measure about 2.748 +-0.002, as far as I can tell with my $10 calipers. Does this measurement and pics seem like the crank is new to you?
Outside of the part number, is there anyway to verify when the crank was produced?
Thanks,
John

Reason: add warning about size
The crank is supposedly NOS (how old, who knows), its the new part that I am really concerned with. The crank is supposedly nitrided (hence the dark color). The "marks" on the snout looked kinda suspect, but I suppose those could have been caused when balanced (internal balanced crank), you can't feel them and the dimensions seem to check out. I have never seen a "new" crank before, do these things seem normal?
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
The journals look new but might have been polished I can see marks on the crank snout I would not associate with a new crank. You cannot get an accurate measurement with calipers ( I have digital calipers and will not use them for crank measurements ) Get a 2-3in. mic that is graduated in 10 thousands of an inch, not 1 thous or take it to a machine shop
from the looks of it it's certainly not new, a crank gear has been installed and it has run from the looks of the journals. If it mics out fine and magnafluxes okay I would not pay more for it than any other used crank.
What are you seeing in the journals that makes it look "used"? Some of the strange coloration visible is reflections from the surroundings onto the journals. The snout definitely got my attention, but it is not marked from the oustide in to the first keyway like a balancer was installed. Could the marks on the snout be from factory balancing?
I have to agree with TwinTurbo, those journals just do not look new to me. It could be the photo but they just do not look as crisply clean and shiny as they should. Just my opinion.
The 2.7482 is correct for a standard shaft and there are no scratches or marks on the journals. Appears to have never been used and more likely than not is a NOS stock crank.
