Default 496 runs for first time...

Got it running and have cam broken in. Started right up with no leaks so far, except for a pesky exhaust leak on the left header flange. As soon as I get the inner valve springs back in, I will drive it and seat the rings. Looking forward to trying out the TKO500 trans.

Guess I need to update my sig, and post some pics!

Sounds like it will be a beast. I haven't been following along, could you give some details on the engine and what year vette it's going in?

Thanks!

Default 496

Hope to get some pics up tomorrow. Car is a '71 that is in the process of getting painted.

The forum has been a big help with my tech questions. My goal was a factory LS6 appearance under a stock BB hood, but with better power. Motor has a 4340 Scat steel crank, SRP 10.2 to 1 pistons, GMPP alum heads, factory low rise LS6 intake, and a solid FT cam.

I have a Keisler modified Tremec 5 speed, Centerforce DF clutch and 3.36 gears. I will take if for a spin tomorrow. Should be a blast to drive once it is finished.

Congrats Doug! If I remember right you were cam shopping not that long ago- what did you end up going with?

I spoke with Harold Brookshire and he recommended one similar to the 243/251 that a lot of guys on the Chevelle Forum use. He thought with my intake, I would be better to use a single pattern. Cam is 243/243 @050 with .586 lift on a 110 LSA. Has a nice sound at idle and crisp throttle response.

I have heard different lash settings for these cams. The book says .024 or .026. Not sure if that is hot or cold. I have them at .020 for initial start up. What lash are you running with yours?

The cam card said .026 but I lash them at a tight .024. I have plenty of low end as it is so I figure I'll set it up to soften that a bit & max out mid-range & top end. With your extra inches you'll pull real hard right off idle. PLEASE post pics or vids if you can- I'd love to hear that thing sing!

Looking good Doug. I like the color of the coating on your headers. Mine have the silver coating & they look nice but there's not alot of variety under my hood- aluminum/chrome tones w/ some orange showing from the block. What brand are the headers themselves? I'm curious because Hedman makes the only 2" primaries for our cars that I know of.

Default Headers

They are Hedman headers. I had a shop south of Atlanta coat them. I like the look of the black for my car. The second tube needed a little clearancing for the steering gear.

I need to get those valve covers painted!

That's interesting- I have a solid 1/4" clearance on that tube but had to put a slight dimple on a passenger side tube where it was tapping the frame at idle. So, are the valve covers going to be Chevy orange?

I know what you mean about the passenger side, mine taps a little there too.

The valve covers will be Chevy orange. I have 3 coats of primer on there now that I have been sanding between coats to get it smooth.

Good so far, but have not gotten it out of the neighborhood yet. I am in the middle of installing the inner valve springs, and fixing a header gasket leak. Should have a much better answer this weekend. It certainly has a more righteous idle than it used to!

Doug,
I figure you've got the rings pretty well seated by now & have had a chance to get a better feel for how it runs- what's the verdict???
