Cleaning oil passages?
I had the block hot tanked, but didnt have the cam bearings removed... (Doh)
My question is where do the oil passages go on a Small block? I havent been able to find a diagram.
That being said, are there any mail order catalogs that have a "pipe cleaner" that is the right size to go through the oil passages in the crankshaft?
Any trouble spots to look for?
Summit and others sell long handled brush sets for cleaning oil galleys. Basically they are rifle bore cleaning tools.
RACE ON!!!
I wanted to try my hand at replacing them... including the removal... which is why they stayed in. Knowing what I know now... garbage gets trapped up behind em, that a hot tank would have cleaned out. Gotta do it the hard way!
I'll check at the gun shop in town. Thanks for the heads up!
I'm wondering if a piece of strand copper wire would do the job for cleanin g out the oil passages in the crank.
Thanks again
You can use it knock the old ones out to.
CFI is right. After the hot tank they will have to be replaced.
You'll need to remove the oil galley screws at the back of the block.
They can be a PITA to get out sometimes.
The little press in "cups" at the front need to be knocked out also.
Then you can use some gun cleaning brushes as reccomended above to clean those galleys.
If you can (without causing any cylinder rust) you can take the block to a good high pressure car was and pressure wash the oil galleys after you brush them out. (grease the cylinders down good)
Spray the water in the main cap oil holes until it runs out all the other oiling holes.
Spray a lot in the rear main bearing saddle as it will follow the normal oiling pattern. Stop up the hole in the oil filter boss with your finger while you or someone else sprays the galleys.
Be prepared to get soaking wet. You gotta sacrifice to do these things.

Take a can of WD 40 or some other spray oil and spray down the cylinders and bearing saddles IMMEDIATELY when you are finished washing. It will rust on the way home if you don't.
Good luck with it.
