can someone tell me the real world difference between i beam and H beam rods.

Its a matter of strength,and I suppose the real world difference would be none for a mild motor to a lot for a blown/nitrous full on race motor.

It has to do with bending as the rod whips back and forth. They are nothing new. They were developed at MIT back in the thirties or forties for aircraft engines and are discussed in Taylor's IC engine text book.
