I'm looking for headers for my 1965 Convt. Does anyone have experience with Doug Thorley equipment? I would like to have headers and exhaust that will not be seen easily from side and rear profiles of the car as muck as possible. Thorley was recommended by a friend but his application is different. I suppose I could use shorties if I have to, but would rather have good headers. Phil
I have Hooker Super Comps on my '66. I would not recommend them unless you plan on custom fitting them yourself. I had to have the collectors modified to clear the foot boxes with (what I considered) acceptable clearance.
I called Hooker to ask if this was a typical problem. They had some old photos of how they fit and they said they were indeed tight against the foot box. I asked why they didn't make a change to the jig for a better fit (the fit is OK everywhere else) and it was clear they considered this a small potatoes requirement. They had no interest in making the change.
I've had Doug Thorley's on my `65 for 11 years. Like Chris's Hookers, I did have clearance issues (but just on the passenger side). No big deal for my muffler shop to correct though. The Thorely's are heavy 14 ga and are nickle chrome plated. If I were replacing them (but they'll probably last forever), I'd probably go for a lighter guage with ceramic coating. The Thorley's came with high quality reducer cones and ARP bolts. Have never had a problem with leaks.
