Cheryl, I was only 6 years old when this movie was made, and I only saw it for the first time a few years ago. I was thinking.....what the heck is a gritty guy like that with a cowboy hat doing as a pilot of a B-52?
Patrick
Patrick, actually it's not that hard to imagine. I think he was being portrayed as an anachronism left over from WWII; do your duty or die trying. He came into WWII late as a poor rural western or southern youngster, managed to stay in after the war and transition to jets for the "Cold War".
He would be a politically incorrect misfit in the new, buttoned up "Air Force", and would have absolutely no respect for those that hadn't seen a real war. But, he survived by expressing just enough respect to keep himself from court martial. This would explain why he had been passed over for promotion and was still flying. His relaxation of military courtesies and stylish headgear while in command is a hold over from actual combat conditions in WWII.
Patrick, that's a great picture. It's a production still of the famous scene of Slim riding the bomb. It's kinda of funny to see the look on his face. He's strung up in front of a blue screen, you can see the top of the sound stage. It's one of those "how did I get here" looks. I see them all the time, it's amazing what actors will do for a buck.:jester
He was also in "Blazing Saddles" and, playing Mr. Taggart, had a couple of inspired lines.
The other immortal line came in the courtroom scene...
Judge: "Order, order!!"
Howard (pensive) says, "You know, I've been reading Nitzsche and Nitzsche says 'From chaos COMES order'...
Neighbor (dismissive) says, "Aw blow it out your a$$, Howard."
I recall hearing in the last few months that Slim Pickens passed on.
I'll always remember him as the BUFF pilot in Dr. Stangelove. James Earl Jones was the
bombardier, and Keenan Wynn played the Army Colonel who attacked the Air Force
base and took out Gen. Jack Ripper, but I can't remember who played him.
George C. Scott played the AF Chief of Staff, and Sellers played several roles including
Stangelove and RAF Group Captain Mandrake, Ripper's aid.
What a great cast and movie. It's an all time classic.
