Yesterday I tried to put it in reverse and it seemed to go into La-La land you know.... it went into reverse but wouldn't backup. It would try but just bog down. I got it back into first and drove home. Back safely at home in the driveway, it easily went into reverse.
About 6 weeks ago I went on an Arizona cruise (105-110 degrees), while cruising through a little town with lots of stop and go's, I thought the clutch was hot. After the car show, everything seemed fine with the clutch and transmission. The next morning I took it to a garage and they said the clutch was adjusted correctly, but the transmisson grease had lost its viscosity. They changed it, and I had no problems driving the 500 miles + home.
Since I bought the car it has always been touchy about getting it in reverse. The previous owner told me you had to be careful or it would get stuck and you'd have to reach under the car and wiggle the linkage. I'm going to readjust the linkage, but am wondering about the internals of the transmission after having that problem in Arizona. Any suggestions? How did I end up in La-La Land yesterday?
I don't have enough experience with Corvette transmission to know (1) "how you got into LA-LA-LAND, or (2) if there is any internal damage, but you do know it is a pre-existing problem. Perhaps, it is worsening. If it were me, I would adjust the linkage BY THE BOOK and see if that didn't improve the problem.
If linkage adjustment doesn't help, then you will have to live with an occasional annoyance...OR...If dealing with the annoyance bothers you, or if you are concerned about having to abandon your disabled ride in a strange place, the only thing I can see to do is get the transmission rebuilt. If it were me, I would deal with my baby's character flaw for a bit. :D
I had a similar problem when I first got my car 2 years ago. It would get "stuck" going into or out of reverse. I changed over to the short throw and readusted the linkage and have not had the problem since.
Thanks for your replies. I will do the adjustments this weekend. I think I saw a good webpage that took you step-by-step through the procedure. I just need to find it again. The only reason I worried about the internals is because it overheated in Phoenix during a cruise. I'll keep everyone informed what happens.
The adjustment is a piece of cake. You need a tool, a drill bit will do.
Put the the tranny in neutral, disconnect the linkeage from the shifter. When the shifter arms are all in line, you will notice a round keyway. Find a drill bit that will fit snug. Now connect the linkeage, and make any adjustments at this time. When you are done, remove the drill bit, and happy shifting.
