Default 1968 convertible interior pillar post

Are the 68 pillar post unique? If so, why? I have what I believe to be my early originals. One thing that I noticed about them is, there is no metal support plate. Is it suppose to be this way?

What are you calling a "pillar post"?

My two are original. If memory serves, they do not have reinforcements. I've noticed the vinyl appears to be a smoother grain than that found on the '69 and up pieces.

Yes, that is how my original pillar post covers look. I guess its another one of those 68 only things. I replaced them with some new covers when I was redoing my interior. The new covers do not fit as well as the originals.

68 only, 69 and up will work but you have to change some other parts as well.

Bryan, The reproduction post covers don't fit and have the wrong attaching plastic fasteners. Please tell me you have the ones you took off!!! I had the same problem and had my orignals recovered at Corvette America. They hate doing them like that because of tracking the part but the orignal ones fit perfect!!! AL.

The post covers are the same for 68-69 but there is a first and second design center windshield cover. I found my car had the 2nd design being build 4/29/68, AL.

I didn't notice any major differences between my originals and the AL KNOCH reproductions. Both had the metal reinforcements on the underside. I did notice a slight grain difference in the vinyls (I'm sure there was even differences in this as supplied to Chevy back in '67-'68). There was also a difference in the color of the vinyl but some interior spray dye fixed that. The "velcro-like" push in fastener had a different spacing between the pins. I saved my old ones and re-used them instead. I'd have to say that I was happy with my AL KNOCH pieces.

I still have the original 68 covers and they do not have the metal supports. My car has a Nov. 67 build date. The original covers fit the windshield post like a glove. Especially at the top of the post around the convertible top guide pin recievers.
The difference that I see in my originals vs. repo (Corvette America) is the vinyl texture. All of my original interior parts have a smoother grain.

I have noticed that Wilcox has been advertising 68 interior packages for sale with correct vinyl on ebay. I wonder if this is the smoother 68 vinyl?

I made a post about this earlier, don't buy the ones from Corvette America because they won't fit. I went threw this on my 68 and set out my originals and when I got them back they fit perfect. Ane that service was done by Corvette America. They don't like doing them that way but that is the only way they fit plus the the ones they sell off the self have the wong retainers and will not match the factory ones, AL.

As far as the dash goes no one makes the correct grain dash (I can't believe mine has held up). Even the windshield frame covers are not being made correct as far as smooth grain. AL.

does not have the support. I have an old NOS set from GM and they are the same except they only have the upper pad for attaching but no lower pad.
