The windshield post VIN tag/plate on my 75 roadster is severly mangled. It's still readable, but in doing a total restoration of the car I'd like to replace it as well.
What's the legality of replacing this plate with an exact reproduction, and does anyone know of a source for reproduction VIN plates? Thanks.
I know rust is a problem with C3 windshield frames and it's pretty common to have to replace/repair the whole frame (That in fact may be how my car's VIN plate got mangled in the first place). But what do you do in that case? Of course then you'd just be changing the original VIN plate over from the old frame to the new one, and not actually replacing it.
i believe that replacing damaged parts and reusing your ORIGINAL vin plate is legal. trying to get a repro vin tag is definitely illegal. there was a time that GM would re-issue a replacement, but it wasn't a duplicate or replica (size and shape wise) of the original. it was done intentionally so that it could be spotted as a replacement. i understand that can no longer be done.
In Illinois they will pull the vin tag off of the windshield rail and replace it in the left door jamb with a metal plate from the DMV/State Police with the original VIN# stamped in to that plate, riveted in, just like your trim tag.
I believe a rebuilt car will have that as well.
I was just having a little fun with Alabama. They didnt even have titles there until rather resently. There have been more laundered cars from there than you can imagine. I would just make the necessary repairs to the framework and use what was left of the tag.

Changing a TRIM Tag is OK, changing a VIN tag is a No No!
