What oil weight do you suggest
Last night on the way back from meeting some forum friends, I noticed a sporadic rattle/tap sound!! Me and the person that drove with me could not figure why or where it was coming from. Eventually it went away. (Eliminates rods) I said possibly something is hanging.. I just change my oil...(have pressure) I put 20-50 in. He sd 10-40 is fine.
The motor is a 327 365 hp. The car 1964.
The prev owner put Castrol 20-50 and told me to do the same, and I have been. It has been quiet up until this last oil change. Is it to thick. Have we diagnosed it right. I'm going to put some Mystery oil in the tank and crank.
Any suggestions.
P.S I the few times I drive it would be in the summer and fall...
Ed

I run Mobil 1 5w30 in all of mine. Unless the engine is reall loose (in need of rebuild) I would stay away from the heavy oils. Most wear comes from start up, you need thin oil to get to the components quickly. This would be even more important on a car that is not driven much.

Tom,
I posted on C1,C2 so i'm flipping back and forth.
Synth oils ay... I also thought that was the way to go,but to many people sd ixnay on the synth oil. Especially on older cars (I guess it would help if I posted my year) 64
(I'll edit my orig post..)
Whats your take on additives?

Whats your take on additives?
To me a good synth oil makes up for any additive and far surpasses dyno oil. Have heard stories about leaks after changing to synth oil but I have not experenced that in my cars (one with 125,000; one with an unknown number of miles; one with 50,000 miles; and a new car).
I still think that for a seldom driven car the ability to get oil to the friction parts and bearings on inital start-up is the most important thing you can do to minimize wear in the engine. That is my primary reason for using the synth 5w30 in my cars.

Particularly in the colder climates of NY, you should use a light weight (5W-30) and not a heavy weight (20W-50).
