Years ago I received a form letter from Tailfins and Bowties addressed to General Manager, Chevrolet Division,General Motors Corporation asking GM to consider making available to individuals, copies of dealers sales orders. Apparantly GM of Canada does this. I sent mine in and have never heard another word. Does anyone know if sales orders or build sheets are available. I read an article that said that GM had them in boxes in a store room but were not inclined to catalog them or make them available.
I believe that Art Armstrong did extensive research on this very subject years ago with the bleesing of Chevrolet but was unable to find any ironclad paperwork. Fast forward to about 2001 Jim Matisson was also commisioned to see if any paperwork existed and I was told that while no GM paperwork was found that he may have found the shipper copies. Since then I have not heard anything so I am assuming that they will not be released due to legal reasons or due to the fact that what paperwork does exist, if any, is incomplete.
I believe Jim is scheduled to be at the Supercar Reunion, 9/1-2; Collinsville IL, with his L88. If you are in the area, you may want to stop by and ask him. Let us know if he has any comments.
What year? There are no records available from GM for the 1976 and earlier cars. For any of these, tankers stickers or documentation from previous owners is about the best you will be able to do.
For some 77-81 cars, Allied-Vaughn was contracted by GM to microfiche dealer invoices. I was able to obtain the dealer invoice for my '80 from them. Try this link. http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...x.php?cmd=area
The National Corvette Museum can provide copies of build sheets for most of the cars built at Bowling Green. The info is on their website. http://www.corvettemuseum.com/
You have a better chance of finding the Holy Grail than any record from the old St. Louis Corvette plant. If GM had them they would surely have them available for sale.
No one thought 50 years ago that anyone would be interested in these documents. How many other businesses have paperwork going back 25-50 years? They are gone but not forgotten.
