My intake manifold has the following number on top right behind the carb: 3933198. This is correct for my motor, however the number has an odd appearence. The first five numbers, "39331" are cast into the manifold, the last two, "98" are stamped.
I know it smells of some sort of forgery but it is a high rise manifold and all of the other replacement work seems so detailed. I can't imagine why someone would go to all the other troube and overlook this. Can this form of the number somehow be correct?
The condition you describe is normal (and unique only for the L-88 intake); see page 423 in Noland's Vol. II book, where he explains it and shows two photos.
this is because chevy milled down the center divider on the stock dual plane to get better top end fuel distribution on the L-88 and the stock casting number was ground off to distinguish between the 2 manifolds.
