Default Correct Plating Questions ....

Hey all ...

Would anyone know the correct plating type for the following:

1. What type of plating was used on the bolts that secure the half
shaft caps on the HD rears?

2. The bolts that hold the rear end cover on - plating type?

3. The bolts with the large captive washer (with grip teeth) that
mount the front extensions that hold the from X member on?

4. The bolts with the large captive washer (with grip teeth) that
mount the rear bumber brackets to the frame?

5. The clutch pedal to Z-bar rod (one that sticks through the
boot on the firewall)?

6. Bolts that hold the emergency cable mounting brackets to the rear
frame?

7. Visible bolts that secure the rear bumpers to the car?
8. Non - visible bolts used to secure bumper brackets to the frame?

9. Non-visible bolts used to secure the front bumper to the brackets?

10. Visible bolts used to secure the bumperetts to the top bumper and
to the lower cross member brackets?

===>>> My car is a 1972 BB.

I have the bolts rust free - want to get them replated correctly.

THANKS in advance for helping me with this!
Want to be sure the car top-flights when it is done.

Bill,

In answer to your questions:

1. What type of plating was used on the bolts that secure the half shaft caps on the HD rears?
From what I recall, these were phosphate plated although it is possible that they may have been unplated. In either case, I doubt the chassis judges would have a problem with a phosphate or natural finish.

2. The bolts that hold the rear end cover on - plating type?
Definitely phosphate plated.

3. The bolts with the large captive washer (with grip teeth) that mount the front extensions that hold the from X member on?

4. The bolts with the large captive washer (with grip teeth) that mount the rear bumber brackets to the frame?
I'm at a loss on this one. Going from memory, I want to say that they were zinc plated, but bright plating parts in chassis applications that aren't visible is counter to GM's standard procedure. I'd have to take a look at my car this evening before I can say for certain... Perhaps someone else will clarify this one.

5. The clutch pedal to Z-bar rod (one that sticks through the boot on the firewall)?
Phosphate plated.

6. Bolts that hold the emergency cable mounting brackets to the rear frame?
If you are refering to the self tapping "anchor" headmark bolts that attach the triangular mounting brackets, they are phosphate plated.

The general rule of thumb is, if you can see a bumper bolt, it is zinc plated and if you can't see it, it is phosphate plated. The visible zinc plated bolts for your 1972 will most likely have an "A" or "M" headmark from what I recall.

I have the bolts rust free - want to get them replated correctly.
Lucky guy! Getting hard to find rust free bolts with correct headmarks here in the northeast.

THANKS in advance for helping me with this! Want to be sure the car top-flights when it is done.
Good luck with the car Bill!

Regards,
