Default '67 Valve Cover Flaw

Why does the 67 Valve cover have a casting flaw and the other years don't? Do all '67s have this? Just wondering.

Patrick,

I thought the mold was broken intentionaly, since the '66 was to be the last midyear, then fixed for use on the '67's, maybee John H. will pop up in this thread.

Not intentional - just developed a crack, probably due to poor maintenance of the mold cooling system, and they left it that way rather than make a new mold (very expensive). There are now two molds, and Paragon owns them; the original production tool, still cracked, which produces correct Late '66-'67 covers with the flaw in two levels of finish, and a second tool which was made for service but was never used by GM, which Paragon also bought - it produces the cover without the crack, in rough as-cast finish as it comes out of the mold.
