I am not sure if this is a 62 or 63 block. It's an 870 block with E162 as a part of the casting. No deck numbers. Can someone tell me what the
E162 tranlates to and the blocks value?
Depends whether it's a Flint block or a Tonawanda block (only Flint blocks were used in Corvettes). Normally, you can tell which one it is by the format of the casting date, but the example you have could be either one. Flint would be E 16 2 for May 16, 1962, or Tonawanda could be E 1 62 for May 1, 1962 (and it would have a raised "T" somewhere adjacent to the casting number).
If it has a 1/8" NPT square-head pipe plug in the front, at about 11 o'clock above the timing cover (photo below), it's a Flint block, and is readily marketable to Corvette guys. If it doesn't have that plug, it's a Tonawanda block, and they were only used in passenger cars and trucks.
