I dunno, Jason...What did your wife think about you taking over her laundry area with a parts washer? :D Now, you're making her park OUTSIDE? You're just lucky there isn't as much snow and ice in Louisana as there is in Michigan. :D :D

Looks great Do you have any type of a finish on it.Wood is poris and loves moisture even if it comes from nasty old oil or grease. My freind has a peice of counter top laminate on his bench and it held in place by moldings he said it wipes right down and also when it gets bad he will remove the molding and the old one and put down a fresh peice and new moldings.I will post a picture of my garage you guys will be shocked

Thanks guys. My wife doesn't know that a garage is for parking IN. I haven't told her yet :D I need to cover the bench in something, maybe seal it with an Acrylic or something. What I know about wood, you can put in a dehydrated pea shell, shake it, and it would rattle. My neighbor told me to put a formica top on it...that scares me. Did I mention when I drive into the Lowe's parking lot, sirens and horns sound warning their employees I am coming. :D
I am pretty proud of it, it is the first official garage that I call my own, so i am enjoying it. :seeya

Covering your work bench top with plastic laminate is not a bad idea. It is easy to clean, doesn't absorb any oils, and will be impervious to most solvents and cleaners. Of course, it will get scratched up, but if it gets really awful you can just replace it again. I cleaned off the top of my work bench today, and the top which was once beautifully painted, is now covered with raw spots, paint stains, resin smears, etc.
I think I will store that idea away for the future. I have the perfect test project in an old secondary "work bench" that I use for storing oils and lubricants. The top is made out of 2X8 planks so rough that you don't dare "wipe" your hand across it; you may as well slap a cactus. I am thinking I will cover that rough plank top with 3/8" plywood to smooth it out, and then cover the plywood with laminate. ;)

Whattaryuh? A shoplifter? It will be hard to shoplift a piece of formica. :jester Congrats on a garage to call your own. :D

I like the idea of a countertop! My old garage started out with a beautiful coat of paint, well, three coats if you count primer. It ended up spotted, scraped and stained within a couple years. Since I have to build a workshop at the new place, I'm open to ideas.
Has anyone got a unique idea which they saw or did to improve workshop utility? One notion suggested by Ron D was a cart on rollers to hold tools and/or parts and provide portable bench.
I find this Craftsman "Project Center" really handy - lots of drawer space, the top has compartments of all sizes for parts and tools, and it comes with a removable tempered masonite insert for the top so you can use it as a "mini-bench" also. They have several varieties, and they're usually on sale. I use it mostly for tune-up tools - saves walking back and forth for stuff.

I have gone to a sheet metal shop...air conditioning type....and had galvanized sheets made like the mentioned formica. I then put the sheet panels on the table top and they are very durable. they get slippery with grease/oils etc but easy to clean up. also my neighbor went to a hospital excess auction and got some stainless steel hospital gurneys...for operating rooms...they work nice for moving locations or tools in the drive way etc.
Mac Tools (no pun intended) makes a really nice roller tool caddy. The tool space is about 16" X 3' and about 5" deep with the same sort of tub on the bottom to give you even more space. The unit has a lid that doubles as a mini work space. This is a picture of the Snap-On one, I like the Mac one better but there site was down. there is made out of plastic and you can drill holes in one end of it for all your screw drivers etc. Its nicer in my eyes and not as noisey when your putting your tools down.

This is it and you wonder why I am before the town board asking to make my garage bigger.Brand new 2002 caddy esculade parks outside that is the garage I useally work.Note to fit the car in I actually roll up to touch the tool box.handel on garage door just misse's rear emblem on car This garage I share with the kids toys and my snowmobile's.In the winter I put the deville in here and the snowmobiles infront of car and the toys go up on the shelf till spring.Hows that for tight.I am trying to get aproval for exstending the garage with the caddy in it.My plans are to make it a oversized 1 car garage that can fit two cars side by side.and a vaulted ceiling so I can put in a lift to fit a third car.the wife and kids can have the garage that the vette is in now and I will use the other
