Default Engine numbers??? What size ar they?

I recently had my block machined including surfacing of the deck square to the crank centerline. In the process, The numbers were wiped out on my engine pad where they once were. I want to get some number stamps and put them back on but I would only be guessing at the size of the font. I remember the build date/broadcast code were larger thean the VIN numbers. The man at the machine shop said he thought they were 5/16" and 3/8", the build code being the larger. Can anyone out there confirm this. By the way, my car is a 1980 L-82. Thanks

I hope that you told the machine shop that it was OK to deck your block. If you didn't, I would be truly "x^%*@@" In my opinion, there is never a reason to deck a block on a street engine. If it stayed "together" as long as it did before the rebuild, it would stay together with the same deck angles for another 100K miles. That being said, stamping a block CORRECTLY" and having the correct broach/machine marks on the pad is very difficult to do. There's a lot more to it than buying a set of stamps from Sears and whacking away. Different years use different sizes and also different fonts. Chuck

I can't help you on the font size but I can tell you that the engine stamp gang, where the numbers and letters are loaded, is available for rent. You tell the gent what you want in it, he loads it for you, charges you an arm and a leg, and mails it to you. When he gets it back, you get some of your money back. I talked with a guy who did the same thing you did to an original block and lost his numbers.
