Has anyone used this company's metal cleaning / rust removal products ?
If yes, how well do they work ? http://www.derustit.com

Sorry, Grumpy, I haven't used that product, but I thought I would pass on a tip that I just read in the New Mexico Chapter newsletter, "Roadrunner".

For cleaning light rust, cad plated, zinc plated, or brass parts, this article recommended using the old Eagle One mag wheel cleaner. It has an acid etching formula (NOT FOR USE ON CLEAR-COATED WHEELS...READ THE LABEL). The article said:

"...Arm yourself with a small toothbrush size wire and brass brush. You'll have to experiment at first, since timing is crucial in this cleaning process. For example, on a cad plated part, such as a gas cap, you will want to spray the item, let it foam, then start to brush carefully with a wire or brass brush, and finish by rinsing thoroughly with clean water. You'll discover that when you use this cleaning product, you will sometimes avoid having to send parts out for replating. On slightly rusted parts, you may be able to avoid bead blasting. NOTE: If the rust scale is heavy, you can soak the part is this solution, and it will totally strip it."

Hmmmm...I wonder how this stuff will work on those brass brake line blocks? Suppose they will look new without having to resort to polishing them to over-restoration?

I use Captain Lee's "Rust Away". I works great!! Beats the hell out of standing in front of a bead blast cabinet. Just put your parts in a bucket of this stuff and let them soak (overnight if they're really scaley) and the parts come out completely rust free. It also leaves a phosphate coating on the part so that paint will adhere better, and if you wash them and dry them thoroughly after soaking, they won't flash rust like a bead blasted part often will.
