Anodizing is a chemical process for aluminum. It's basically forming a layer of aluminum oxide on the surface of the part. Aluminum oxide is harder than most aluminum alloys, so this increases the life of parts that are subject to wear or errosion. It can also add color to the parts.
Are you thinking of powder coating? That's a powder that is applied to a metal then baked on in an oven. It's an alternative to painting, has a tougher surface. It's available in a lot of colors.
You can buy a kit for powder coating and use a household oven for the baking. Don't use your wifes good one though.
Also, on a cheaper note if you just need a quick touch up job, Mid America sells factory matched anodized spray cans. Just an FYI if that's an option. I'll probably go that route for my rear window trim.
I can shed some light on this, my family runs an Anodizing factory. Like said above, its a chemical process, your thinking of powder coating at home. There is very little on a vette that can be Anodized, as you cant Anodize cast aluminum because it is porous it will pit. www.bowers-mfg.com this is our place, cheers,
Steve

On the 1970,71, and 72 C3's the LH and RH front grills are chrome plated aluminum. Also the 69 factory side pipe exhaust covers are chrome plated aluminum. My understanding is that before aluminum can be chrome plated, it needs a conductive anodiz coating before the traditional chrome plating processing can take place. Aren't these aluminum pieces cast aluminum? Also, since I have some of these parts that I would like to be rechromed, can you provide some words about the technics of anodizing aluminum in preparation for chrome plating?

The process for chroming aluminum is identical to the process used for steel except for the use of special pre-plating solutions to allow the copper, nickel, chrome plating to adhere to the aluminum surface. but we dont do any chroming, not enough volume anymore. Anodized coatings are non conductive, which is why we need to clean the anodizing off the threads for the end caps of maglites, we do their black, sliver, gunmetal, we also do work for steelcase, sub zero, wolf, viking, and u-line. There are some good at home kits from Caswell, but it would probably be cheaper to find a chromer to do the re chroming for you, good luck,
Steve
