Have my car up on the lift and starting to clean up the underside, servicing and doing repair or replace work if needed. Side exhaust pipes are two years old and have rust spots on them, what is the best solution to prevent this in the future? :)
If these side pipes are natural steel as I think they are then there are only two ways I know of to keep natural steel from rusting:
(1) If you want to keep them original, your only option is to keep them oiled good using something like Pre-Lube 6. If you drive the car, this isn't a good option. (2) You could try clear-coating them with a high temperature coating like VHT. Some owners use VHT to clear coat exhaust manifolds, and it seems to work for them.
I agree with you on most points you made Chuck. There is only one real problem with clear coating them. They get hot and usually when clear coat gets hot it has a tendency to yellow over time. There really is no way to keep raw steel from showing some signs of age. Age being corrosion.
I know I would get static from the purist's but I use VHT Cast Iron hi-temp when I'm doing them. I put it on with a torch. Pre heat the surface and get all the water out of it and them spray it on and the pass the torch over it again back and forth until its all done. It may not be original but it looks better than rust a year from now.
Caution: dont blow yourself up doing it this way. I have heard of guys putting them in the oven for a half hour and then painting them (make sure the wife is out for the day when using her oven). I prefer walking on the wild side with an open flame :D ar ar ar
Yuh ain't gettin' no static from uh "purist", yuh canajun...Ima' askin' yuh what kinda' coatin' I shud put on'em. Iffn' I wuz uh "purist" I wud be screamin' "BLASPHEMER!!!". :jester :jester
