Now I'm ready to reinstall it, but the only installation tool I can find anywhere is from Summit and is $45. I probably won't be able to borrow one.
Patrick, I thought you were talking about the $45 puller/installer in your previous post..if I am not mistaken, they go both ways...on and off.
You need to find you an installer; the installer is more important than the puller. Try the equipment rental stores where they rent tools and equipment; you may be able to rent one there. How about Tony, does he have one at his shop? He may let you borrow it if you have spent a lot of money with him. :D
If you didn't scratch up the puller, I would be tempted to clean it up, put it back in the original packaging and return it to Pep Boys for credit (Reason: You discovered you couldn't install the damper with it). Er...you DID save the original packaging didn't you? You DIDN'T rip it to shreads in your enthusiasm to get started did you? :D :D
I'd definately use the proper installer. I also put some anti-sieze on the snout to make it easier to get back off next time. I have the Pro-Form one (Jegs #778-66514, $61.99) and would recommend it. I've broken some of the lesser ones when removing a damper (though I've never had one break in installing).
Get about an 8" length of 7/16"-20 all-thread and a couple of large, thick hardened washers (one of which needs to be larger in diameter than the hole in the balancer hub), and a 7/16"-20 nut. Run the all-thread all the way into the threads in the crank nose, position the balancer on the crank snout with the keyway aligned, oil up the exposed threads, washers, and nut, install the washers and nut, and crank on the nut; it will pull the balancer on in exactly the same manner as the $60.00 installer tool without risk of damaging the threads for the balancer bolt. Then remove the all-thread and install the balancer bolt and washer and torque to specs.
The All-thread model would probably work for the balancer on my "mock-up" small block, but not for my big block dampers. Don't know if there is a different tolerance (or ??), but it took a LOT more pull and push (especially pull) to remove/install the BB dampers than it did to remove the small block one.
Patrick - how far a drive is "Western Maryland" from Annapolis?
The "Michigan homemade balancer presser" is already mentioned in the "Chevrolet 1969 Chassis Service Manual" on page 6-36, maybe even in an earlier Manual.
Quote: "If engine or radiator has not been removed from the vehicle a 1/2"- 20 x 5" bolt and a 1/2"-20 nut may be used in place of the bolt and nut of Tool J-21058."
This is how I installed mine and it worked pretty good. In Germany it was not easy to get the bolt and nut in a non-metric size.....
