Re: Need Engine Installation Advice... (Patrick Tighe)
I hate to be the voice of doom and gloom (actually, I kinda like it, but it sounds better if you say you hate it  ) so here's my caveat emptor- Patrick, I would look upon the $60 as a cheap insurance policy. If you have helpers, putting the engine & tranny in as a unit isn't as much of a problem but if you're flying solo, there's too many things that can go wrong. While you're trying to lower the engine, control the tail of the tranny, keep things level, clear the rails AND not hit the body, you'll find yourself saying "I wish I'd spent the $60."
When I did the frame-off on my wife's Jeep, I put the body back on with nothing forward of the firewall before I reinstalled the engine. When I plunked the engine in, I thought there was lots of room to pop it in so I did it alone. As I wrestled with lowering, guiding, tilting and moving, I managed to bang the beautifully painted firewall a couple times, scraped the end of the valve cover as well as denting the tranny tunnel. Mind you, the inline six doesn't have great attachment points for the chain, but an engine tilt would have made the job 110% easier and safer.
After all, how much do you value your firewall? Your engine? The paint on each? $60 doesn't seem like much money compared to these things.
Re: Need Engine Installation Advice... (Patrick Tighe)
I found out (after the fact) one of the local auto supply shops rents some tools, including tilters. Do the shops in your area do this as well? Might be worth a call......
Re: Need Engine Installation Advice... (Patrick Tighe)
Pat.
If you are going to do it that way I would recommend leaving the motor mounts off untill the engine and trans are in place and then lifting the whole thing up and installing them after. Just a tip as I just did the same thing today and it made life alot easier
Re: Need Engine Installation Advice... (Patrick Tighe)
Thanks. I think of it as a cheap insurance policy plus it keeps the dust and dirt away from the cars. Any one that come into the shop gets the same treatment. If de car is real fancy it gets the cotton sheets also. :yesnod:
Re: Need Engine Installation Advice... (Chuck Sangerhausen)
We got this fancy place called Value Village and for $2-$5 a hit you can get the real nice ones :D . They are more for dust protection. If I didn't cover them up I would spent hours just cleaning what was already clean. you know the drill :)
