Default Tach problems continued

Well, pulled off the tach "condensor" as suggested in the my other thread, no change, cleaned off all of the connections leading to the tach and associated electrical connectors (with the battery disconnected, and the system de-energized), no change. Checked on the ciurcut board behind the tach, all looks just fine..........Anything else I might have missed    .........Finally, with the key off, the tach needle stays put at 1,800 rpms, when the key is turned on, or the car is running, the tach slams down to zero, and no longer moves at all..........

:cry :cry :cry

Once again, any assitance would be greatly appreciated.......

Sincerely,

Bill S.

By "pulled off", Bill, I presume that you mean you replaced the tach filter with a known good filter. Simply removing the filter and/or looking at it would not help correct problem

...cleaned off all of the connections leading to the tach and associated electrical connectors...
I would take additional steps to assure myself that the electrical connections were good and tight, without deformation of the contact terminals resulting in looseness and erratic contact. While I was in the area, I would also check the wiring harness just on the chance that ole Bubba might have been in there "messin' wid da wars", i.e. use the wiring diagram in your service manual to trace wire colors to the respective terminals.

Also, do not overlook any black ground wires that may be in the vicinity of the underdash wiring harness. It will be necessary to physically remove the screwed connection to clean the terminal and the metal surface to which it is attached with fine sandpaper.

Checked on the ciurcut board behind the tach, all looks just fine...
It is unlikely, in my opinion, that a printed circuit board can be determined to have a problem by visual inspection. If none of the steps above work, I think you will have to remove the circuit board and tachometer and have them checked out by a specialist.

Did you perchance check out Zip's tachometer repair section like Steve suggested? I didn't look at it myself, but there may be something simple we're overlooking here.

Hey Chuck,

Will check out all of what you suggested.....As for the printed board, I mearly checked it to see whether or not any connections had been broken...........Will replace that with another unit as soon as my local Corvette Guru gets back from bike week........

Thanks,

Sincerely,

Bill S.
