Re: Steering Box and Coupler installation pic... (Patrick Tighe)
It's probably early to tell but any difference in effort turning the steering wheel. Not that's I'd expect a brawny buck like yerself to notice much difference.... :D
Re: Steering Box and Coupler installation pic... (Patrick Tighe)
Patrick, When you installed the coupler did you leave the 3/8" gap. Check you AIM. It looks like the coupler is tight. I believe the gap is to help reduce direct road feel when steering. Also nice job to the steering column. I always thought the column was supposed to be black. But I like the way yours looks.
Re: Steering Box and Coupler installation pic... (RESPO6T7)
Actually, Respo, I think that 3/8" (0.250"-0.375" in my AIM) is measured right where the upper stud and rubber bumper is, i.e. from the rear face of the rubber flexing element to the front face of the upper hub flange. At least that is what my AIM seems to be showing.
I think they are basically saying that the rag joint should be installed in its' relaxed condition without preload or deformation of the flexing element. You would have to be a real brute to change that dimension very much from its relaxed state, and have wondered why they even bother to specify it since it is pretty much fixed by the configuration of the rag joint.

Mac. Here's the secret...."matte" clear coat. Krylon makes it. You can use the "regular" stuff, and if you don't put it on too heavy, it doesn't shine TOO much :) Chuck
Re: Steering Box and Coupler installation pic... (Mac)
Patrick, I'm glad to hear that the rag joint is correctly installed. Also, I like the steering column not painted. What will you treat the natural steel column and geat box now that their both installed on the car? Car is really looking good. Keep the pics coming.
Re: Steering Box and Coupler installation pic... (Mac)
Mac,
I have to honestly admit ignorance on this question. It may very well be a ground for the horn as my horn did not work before I replaced my coupler and it still does not work as other parts of the car including the rest of the wiring are still apart. It may also actually be for the radio believe it or not. Chevy ran all sorts of grounds on these cars when radios were installed to cut static and this may be one of those. Pat, do you have grounds in your front spindle caps? I think you should.
Does any one out there really know??? Enquiring minds are asking!!!
