Default Preventing Rearend Noise

No jokes please! :bb

I had to tear down my differential to restore the case and clean out the parts from contaminated oil. While I was in there I changed out the cluches. What is the key to putting it all back so that it doesn't whine??

Well, that spoils my evil plans.

There was a thread on C3 forum about rebuilding differentials (with good pictures) not long ago but, when I searched, I couldn't find it. Maybe someone else'll have better luck.

Noskillz, positraction differentials are no different from the regular differentials...the pinion has to be precisely shimmed to obtain an acceptable gear mesh pattern with the ring gear.

It is done using a dial indicator and colored marking material on the gears to reveal the gear mesh pattern. It is half art and half science, and best left to experienced professionals. A chimp could probably be trained to do it with enough time, experience, and bananas, but at the end of it, he would have the experience and you wouldn't. This from a dyed-in-the-wool DYI guy.

Oh is this open to some really good ones. I use Red Line diff additive in all the diffs I do, a good investment of about $13-15 CDN or 3 cents US. Heck Mac has it in his rear end :D

Yeah, interesting, Noskillz, but in the very first paragraph, it sounds like an echo in here, i.e. "Our highly-trained staff of competent chimpanzees is standing by to assist you in your 'rear-end' needs." Well, I guess everybody started out knowing nothing and everybody has to start somewhere if they are going to learn. What have you got to lose anyway? Maybe, your expensive ring gear and pinon. :D

Although proper ring & pinion setup can be accomplished at home, I really recommend having a professional do the job. However, if a person really insists on trying it (and that is really the only way to learn), then here is some information that should be helpful.

Oh my, Ronster, I didn't realize you were an "experienced professional" when it comes to rear ends. Are you saying you "do" one by cleaning up the outside and "cast blasting" it, or do you actually set up the gears? If you "do" the latter, then may I compliment you on your "skill set"; you are an extraordinary technician. By the way, are you still having trouble with your banana habit?

:jester  :smash: :jester

Well, it looks like my clutch packs were to loose. Even with new disks the pinion play is still around .010 ~ well over the .001 to .012 recommended on the overhaul manual. I have heard that the yoke play from this can cause chatter around corners. Thats what I had, really bad chatter around corners. (And no, it wasn't cause my wife was in the car with me  )

The rebuild kit I got from Zip has all kinds of shims for the pinion, but none for the clutch packs. Well, time to order and wait a week...
