I'm innocent! My Dodge is a 1996; it just looks like new. :D
Some of the older radar detectors 'leak' like previous post suggested.
Another possibility is the guy might have a radar jammer, an illegal device which emits a broad spectrum radar signal designed to make police radar give false readings, unlike military jammers which are designed to cause malfunction and/or to overwhelm enemy radar.
Patrick, if it was a LoJack equipped vehicle, it must have been stolen. I don't think they activate the LoJack unit until the vehicle is reported stolen. I believe the LoJack unit "sleeps" until activated.
Some of the rental companies were getting complaints about their use of some kind of LoJack type transmitter to check renters speeds. They would measure the distance the car had traveled using the signal, then compute the average speed by dividing by the elapsed time. They then called the cops on them if they were over the limit, and would give them the vehicle's location. Renters were saying it was an invasion of privacy, the rental companies were saying it was justified to minimize wear and tear on the vehicles. I don't know how it got settled...there may still be some transmitters in rental vehicles.

The rental car "surprise, we added $150 to your rental because you were speeding" thing was done with GPS locators, and the rental outfit lost big-time in court last month - they had to stop using the devices, refund all the "speeding" surcharges plus damages, and pay a big fat fine on top of it.

Thanks for the update, John. I had gotten a few of my facts twisted. It's good to hear that justice still makes an appearance every now and then. It would have been even better if they had given the CEO some jail time for impersonating an officer. :D :D

There was an 'incident' in England where a couple of the constables were out doing a speed trap, I mean, uhh, road safety operation when their hand-held radar gave a bizarre reading (199+ mph) and then ceased function just as a couple of Harrier fighter jets passed overhead.
The constables, seeing that their radar no longer funtioned, drove over to the nearby RAF base to complain that the jets' radar jamming had damaged it. The base commander told the cops that they were luck that's all that was damaged as their radar had triggered automatic defense systems, including the radar jamming, but the pilots were able to abort the missles before they fired.
This incident was reported in a 'police only' publication called Blue Line Magazine so whether it's true or not is beyond my knowledge.
