Front spindle gasket - what does this thing do?
I've got the driver's side front suspension disassembled, and the spindle gasket - a felt-like ring on the face of the spindle, behind where the hub would mount - is off for cleaning the spindle.
So, uh, what does this thing do? If it's not too expensive, should I just replace it? What adhere's it to the spindle?
Inquiring minds want to know.

There is lip seal that keeps the bearing grease from leaking all over, but any lip seal is not 100 percent effective. My theory is that this felt seal keeps dust, dirt, mud, whatever from sticking to the back of the hub assembly where there is normally a barely detectable film of grease. If grunge accumulates on top of the lip seal, the seal wear rate would increase, and eventually there could be contamination of the grease in the inner bearing. JMO.
I would definitely replace them. I think there is also be a paper gasket between the spindle and the brake backing plate, but the function and need for that gasket is less clear.
