I am waiting for my 696 to be returned, in the meantime I have a 693, 37 amp. I am wondering :
1.Why did GM bother to increase the amperage to 41 when equipped with T.I. ?
2. Will any damage result in using a 37 amp alternator with 427 and T.I., (NON A/C) ?
3. Will any conflicts arise if the 37 amp were changed to 61 ?
Obviously Lectric Limited Jer :D
Thanks to any / all
I don't claim to be any kind of expert on electrics, Jer, but I think I can answer a couple of these.
1.Why did GM bother to increase the amperage to 41 when equipped with T.I. ?
I think this is like that 'tree in the forest' question. An additional 4 amps isn't going to make much of a difference. Perhaps GM was concerned the TI would draw a bit more than points? The alternator produces much more power than required to simply run the systems of the car which is why a regulator is required.
2. Will any damage result in using a 37 amp alternator with 427 and T.I., (NON A/C) ?
The only problem I could see would be if the TI does that much draw more, it could slowly drain the battery but I doubt the 4 amps difference would be remarkable.
3. Will any conflicts arise if the 37 amp were changed to 61 ?
Not as long as your regulator is functioning properly. Remember, that 61 amps represents the total power producing capacity. The regulator controls output to what is required.
