Took apart the steering linkage over the weekend. Only thing useable is the P/S relay rod & Pitman arm  . What should the finish be on these, natural or black?
Thanks
Hi there, 70BBvert. I believe these items are 'natural' but the more expert minds will likely correct me. Was everything else too rusted to rehabilitate?
The outer tie rod ends were shot, one of the adjusting sleeves was bent - probably a tow hook at some point - and the idler arm had a decent amout of play at the relay rod. Saved the sleeve claps though  Figured on a full overhaul anyway. Now I have two P/S relay rods, the other is black - came with a complete P/S set up I bought from a guy locally. He's planning on racing & is converting to manual steering.
Getting ready to take the body off. Was searching some old post for tips earlier.
It sounds like you've got your work cut out for you.
Sleeves can be bent by hopping curbs as well. :nonod: Be sure to check the frame around your steering box for stress cracks. Vettes aren't known for this problem generally but if you've ever watched a steering box flop around (and I have) then you'll appreciate this advice!
Was the car originally power steering or are you converting? I had the option to convert but chose to stick with what GM provided- 'Arm-strong' steering. The only time it becomes an issue is parallel parking and even then it's not that bad.
Car originally had P/S. Several pieces were missing though & I had an opportunity to buy the complete set-up from another forum member locally. Bought the entire set up, bolts, brackets, pump, hoses, belts, etc. Now I have a few excess parts to sell, but figured I would determine the correct finish before deciding which one to keep. :)
