I know 69 Corvettes were painted with lacquer paint but were some of the colors clearcoated? The reason that I am asking is because a guy that I was talking to at Bloomington Gold told me that cortez silver was clearcoated from the factory. Is he correct? Thanks in advance.
NO. But you have to understand that many paints have a clear base and binder. When silver is mixed, there is usually a little drop of black, blue etc. for tinting and about 50% silver metalic particles, then about 50% clear binder. So when the color is sprayed, the metalics lay in a layer and the clear tends to come to the top.

I would never say never, but my opinion is...highly doubtful.
Like Wombvette said, metallic paints are basically minute metal particles suspended in clear or tinted clear. If GM clearcoated them again after the color coat, it would only have been a last resort procedure to address a specific problem. There would have been additional labor and cost involved, and a more likely action would have been to discontinue the color altogether. On C4s, some colors bit the dust because they were too difficult to get right in production.
Any such special treatment for Cortez Silver cars would be documented in the literature, and I have never seen such references. Word to the wise...always take the word of self appointed "experts" with a grain of salt until you study the question yourself. Present advice is not excluded from this admonition. :D :D :D
